What is MACA? + Maca PB Smoothie

In a world where dietary advice is constantly changing and adapting (not to mention not always from accurate or reliable sources), sometimes it can feel overwhelming on how to lead a healthy life. As of late, there has been the discovery of new “super foods”. In fact, these foods are not new, and they have always been super. But what is new (and rather super), is there is now research to back their claims, proving what we have always known - nature is packed full of nutritious and healing foods.



 is a plant that grows in central Peru in the high plateaus of the Andes Mountains. It has been cultivated as a vegetable crop in this area for at least 3000 years, and over the last few years has become increasingly popular. The maca root contains fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins and minerals. Calcium makes up 10% of maca’s mineral count, with magnesium and potassium also present in significant amounts. These minerals are valuable to the body as they assist in a range of essential functions such as strengthening bones and teeth, transmission of nerve impulses, conducting muscle contractions, and aids in a host of enzyme reactions within the body. Along with these minerals, vitamins comprised in maca include thiamine (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2) and ascorbic acid (vitamin C). These vitamins help the body to turn food into energy and protect against immune system deficiencies. Phyto chemicals present in the maca root work to balance the hormones in both women and men, through supporting the pituitary and hypothalamus gland.

Maca can be purchased in capsules or as a powder, which can then be added to foods. Because it naturally has a nutty, malted flavour, it pairs well with nut inclusive recipes, such as smoothies or in baking. Below is a go to recipe, packed flavour and loaded with nutrients.


Maca Peanut Butter Smoothie 



250ml plant based milk

1 frozen banana

2 medjool dates / 4 dried dates

2 T peanut butter

1 T maca powder

1 T cacao powder (optional)

½ t ground cinnamon



Add all ingredients to a blender and process until creamy. Top with some cacao nibs and peanut butter for some added deliciousness!
